The Rules Nobody Wrote Down
- Nobody handed you a rulebook saying lying is wrong. Yet you know it.
- You also "know" whether you're good at maths, or bad at speaking.
- Some of those inner rules lift you. Others quietly hold you back.
- They're your beliefs and values, and they shape everything you do.
Belief PYQ 1M
A belief is something a person accepts as true, with or without proof.
- A belief system is the whole set of beliefs a person holds about themselves, others and the world.
How beliefs form
- Family and upbringing · culture and religion · teachers and friends · personal experience · media.
Empowering vs limiting beliefs
- Empowering: help you grow. Example: "I can learn anything with practice."
- Limiting: hold you back. Example: "I'm just not a public speaker."
- Limiting beliefs can be changed by testing them: small successes prove them wrong.
Values PYQ 1M
Values are lasting principles about what is important and right, which guide a person's choices and behaviour.
Common values
- Honesty · integrity · respect · responsibility · discipline · compassion · fairness · loyalty.
Kinds of values
- Personal values: what you hold important in your own life (family, health, freedom).
- Professional values: expected at work (punctuality, accountability, confidentiality, quality).
- Cultural values: shared by a society (respect for elders, hospitality).
Virtue PYQ 1M
A virtue is moral excellence shown through habitually good conduct.
- A value is what you believe is good; a virtue is that value practised so often it becomes your character.
- Examples: honesty · courage · patience · humility · gratitude · self-control.
Role of virtues in personal development
- Build character and trust · guide decisions under pressure · earn respect · lead to lasting relationships and success.
Beliefs vs Values
| Basis | Beliefs | Values |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | what you accept as true | what you consider important or right |
| Question | "What is true?" | "What matters?" |
| Change | can change with new evidence | more stable, change slowly |
| Example | "Hard work pays off." | discipline |
How Values and Beliefs Shape Attitude PYQ 15M
Beliefs and values sit underneath attitude. They decide how we see a situation, which decides how we feel and act.

- Values set priorities: if you value learning, you see challenges as chances to grow.
- Attitude follows: a positive, hopeful outlook towards life and work (→ 1.6).
- Behaviour follows attitude: you keep trying, ask for help, and take on new tasks.
- Results feed back: success strengthens the belief; failure handled well refines it.
- Example:
- Belief: "Skills can be developed."
- Value: growth.
- Attitude: sees a failed interview as practice.
- Behaviour: asks for feedback and prepares better.
- Opposite example: the belief "I'm unlucky" leads to a negative attitude ("why bother?") and giving up.
Values vs attitudes
- Values are deep and broad and change slowly; attitudes are narrower, about specific things, and change more easily. Full table → 1.6.
Values and personality
- Values shape character, choices and how others see a person (→ 3.8).
- Self-actualization, the first part of the 15-mark question → 1.10; the components of attitude → 1.6.
