  1. Identify and evaluate an opportunity
    • Spot an unmet need or problem: through observation, market trends, customer complaints, new technology.
    • Evaluate it: market size, competition, the entrepreneur's own skills, expected returns.
    • Output: a promising opportunity (→ 3.1).
  2. Develop the business idea and check feasibility
    • Shape the opportunity into a concept: product, target customers, price, how it will earn money.
    • Test feasibility: technical, market and financial (→ 9.2).
    • Output: a viable business concept.
  3. Prepare the business plan / project report
    • Write down goals, market analysis, operations, team, financial projections and risks (→ 7.1).
    • Output: a plan to guide the venture and convince investors and banks.
  4. Determine and mobilise the resources
    • Work out what is needed: money, people, machinery, premises, technology, suppliers.
    • Raise funds: own savings, bank loans, angel investors, venture capital, government schemes (→ 5.3).
    • Output: finance and resources in place.
  5. Start and manage the enterprise
    • Register the business, set up operations, hire the team, launch the product.
    • Manage daily operations, marketing, finance and customers; fix problems early.
    • Output: a running business.
  6. Growth, and harvest / exit
    • Grow through new products, markets or locations.
    • Eventually the founder may harvest: sell the business, merge, go public (IPO) or pass it on (→ 4.6).
    • Output: a sustained or successfully exited enterprise.

Example: Ritesh Agarwal noticed poor-quality budget hotels while travelling (1), shaped a standardised-rooms idea (2), planned the model (3), raised seed funding (4), launched OYO in 2013 (5), and expanded across many countries (6).

  3. Get PAN, TAN and GST registration.
  4. Licences: trade licence, shop and establishment licence, and industry-specific ones (e.g. FSSAI for food).
  5. Open a business bank account, arrange premises and utilities.
